As we approach the 2024 Olympics I thought I would share the story of our very own Bacup Olympian Willie Foster.
Born on the 10th of July 1890 Willie was a freestyle swimmer who took part in the 1908 London Olympics.
In 1908 he won the Gold medal as part of the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay team and in the 400-meter freestyle race, he finished fourth.
In the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, he won the Bronze medal as part of the British 4×200 metre freestyle relay team.
Over one hundred years later Willie was still the youngest in Britain to hold a Gold medal for his swimming event.
